I logged in and started my taxes, and now I'm in an "Expert Assist" upcharged product I don't want or need. When I select "Switch Products", all of the options under "Do it yourself" are grayed out. I don't want to lose the ~2.5 hours I've spent to filling out my taxes myself (I itemize deductions every year and have it figured out). If I have to start over, and TurboTax only offers a start over option after tricking my into this higher cost service, then I might as well explore other services.
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
Sorry--- in order to clear it and start over in a lower version---you really start over.

HOW CAN I DOWNGRADE TO A LOWER VERSION
Thanks for confirming. For this reason, along with their quiet discontinuing of "ItsDeductible", I've re-started my filing with TaxAct. It costs less even with 1 state filing fee, and it has donation assistant for FMV. So far, it's just as easy to use as TT, so I'd recommend anyone seeing this thread to make the switch as well.
I couldn't find a way out of it, I clicked continue just to move past the screen and now I have it too. I believe I will switch to another service, forcing people into a product they don't need is ridiculous.
I 100% agree. This is fraudulent practice. I also could not get to my "do it myself" Premium service.
I have been using TurboTax for over 15 years. Every year the fees increase but this...this is an all new low for TTx. I was forced to accept "Expert Services" because I checked the box associated with tuition payments. Suddenly, TTx is unable to calculate taxes with education expenses? I tried to back out, nope. I logged out and back in, nope - unable to change my product (sold for the low bargain price of $179.) I am beyond irritated and despite the convenience of autopop. from last year, I will be using another service. Bad move TTx, I'm taking my business--and all 6 of my adult children's taxes--elsewhere. That's 7 customers gone for the low, bargain price of $179.
I also got hit with this secret service i didnt select and will now be leaving TT for good - **bleep** you TT you greedy **bleep**
I am all ready to file, but I just noticed that expert assist was added and there is no way to remove it!? I shouldn't be forced into selecting a product I don't need, which is what happened in my case. Needless to say, my time is more valuable than the added cost, so I don't want to clear and start over. If they can add Expert Assist at any time, they should be able to remove it at any time. Whoever designed this software has some explaining to do because it just does't seem right. Instructing customers to clear and start over is not the answer.
If you are using TurboTax Online, you can downgrade to a different product, as long as you have not filed your return yet. See the following TurboTax help article for the steps on how to do it:
Agree 100% , I didn't need expert service but they "recommended it". Then force you to wipe your entire return, if you return to Do=It-Yourself, I WILL NOT USE THEM AFTER THIS YEAR!
Same thing happened to me. So annoying. This will be the last time I ever use TurboTax again. They force you to upgrade to a service you don't need. Such a rip off!!!
I ran into the same issue. It is wrong that they sneak it in the end like that. Thinking about filing a compliant with the federal trade commission. How can they even charge you for something that you didn’t even use?
Well, the only options are basic expert assist or premium expert assist. I don't want expert assist at all because the last time I chose expert assist because I had actual questions about something complicated in my taxes that year, the person was a moron who basically told me they couldn't answer my questions. It's a waste of money and apparently now, the only option. I will not be using Turbo Tax after this year, the only reason I'm using this year is because I've already started. I will make sure all 3 of my kids start with something else as they sure as hell don't need to pay for this.
Since I resent being forced, by Intuit, to build a new pc just to accommodate Windows 11, just to accommodate TTax 2025, I was considering trying the online version of TTax Premier. I've consistently used Intuit's products since the mid-90's, including TTax, Quicken and QBooks.
I read online comparisons and almost all of what I read mentioned being 'prodded' into paying for extra services while completing your taxes.
This thread seals my decision to try HR Block this year, after consistent loyalty to Intuit. And my two adult children, whom I weaned on Intuit products, will also be going elsewhere...
To all those who took the time to express their pain & frustration, thanks for sharing specifics; saved me the trouble!
