How do I request an extension for my federal tax payment???

An extension gives you more time to file a return. It does not give you more time to pay. The IRS will add penalties and interest on any unpaid tax during the extension period until you pay your tax bill.

If you can’t pay — and are not ready to file your tax return — file an extension to avoid late filing penalties.

Go to Free federal tax extension is now available.

And don’t forget state taxes. Some states give you an automatic extension if you file a federal extension. Others do not. Check with your state.

The IRS and the states have payment plans.

Complete and send in form 4868. You can find it in your Turbotax program under View forms. Click on "Open Form" and type in the search box form 4868 and click on the line that comes up showing the form. The program will fill in all the information for you. Print it out and mail it Certified Mail (to show proof of mailing date) to the address given on the back of the form. You must attach a check for your calculated tax to avoid a penalty for not paying by filing deadline. (April 18, 2023)
