I have not filed and it states that Deluxe can not be taken off when I try to start over.....I really don't need to spend the extra $30 if it does not help my return.
Major tax reform and major changes in the tax forms have also resulted in changes to the tax software.
WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY? I WANT THE FREE EDITION
The information that you can enter in Free Edition is pretty limited now. Thanks to the new tax laws, there are no more simple Form 1040EZ or 1040A's. Everything goes on a little “postcard-size” Form 1040 that has six extra "schedules" with it, and if you need any of those schedules, you are not able to use the Free Edition. Using the standard deduction instead of itemizing does NOT mean you will not need any of those schedules.

If you qualify to use it, there is another free version of the software:
Try Free File:
You qualify if your income was $34,000 or less, or $66,000 or less if active duty military, or if you qualify for Earned Income Credit

Note: If you do not qualify to use Free File then you will have to upgrade to Deluxe or higher in the paid versions of the software.
Online Deluxe $59.99 State software $44.99
You might need Deluxe for something. In the regular Turbo Tax Free Edition, information that you can enter is limited now. Under the new tax laws, there are no more simple Form 1040EZ or 1040A's. Everything goes on a little Form 1040 that has six extra "schedules" with it, and if you need any of those schedules, you are not able to use the Free Edition.
https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-1040
There is also The Turbo Tax Free File program which is free for federal and state. And has more forms than the Federal Free Edition, like Schedules A, B, C , D, E, F, EIC, H, K-1, SE, etc.
NOTE: You will have to log out of your regular Turbo Tax account and setup a new account with a new username and new password or it will take you back to regular Turbo Tax.
To qualify for the Free File website you just need to meet one of these 3 things
AGI $34,000 or less
Active duty military with AGI of $66,000 or less
OR qualify for EIC (earned income credit.)
In order to use the Free File program, you have to start it at a special website. Click on the bottom Orange button I Qualify Start Now and set up a NEW account or it will take you back to regular Turbo Tax.

I will try that ....so frustrating to have to start a new account. I made less than 10k and my medical expenses are almost 8k does not change my return.
If you had less than $10K of income then you are not going to owe income tax, nor will your medical expenses change anything. Medical expenses are an itemized deduction that only have an effect if you meet a threshold that is above your Adjusted Gross Income, and if your itemized deductions exceed your standard deduction--which will not come into play in your case.
You should certainly try using the Freedom Edition.

This is some bait and catch crap right here. I have been filing for 6 years with turbo tax before they went free and now that they have they don't offer it by default. They even charge you now for direct deposit. If I wanted to pay I would go to H&R block locally.
"They even charge you now for direct deposit".
There is no charge for direct deposit. You misunderstood something. If you choose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund there is a refund processing fee to let the third party bank extract the fees and send the rest of the refund to your account or prepaid card. They have had the refund processing fee for literally years. No one has to do that-- you are allowed to pay your fees upfront using a credit/debit card in order to avoid that refund processing fee and have direct deposit of your refund.
WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY? I WANT THE FREE EDITION
The information that you can enter in Free Edition is pretty limited now. Thanks to the new tax laws that began for 2018 returns, there are no more simple Form 1040EZ or 1040A's. Everything goes on a Form 1040 that has three extra "schedules" with it, and if you need any of those schedules, you are not able to use the Free Edition. Using the standard deduction instead of itemizing does NOT mean you will not need any of those schedules.

If you qualify to use it, there is another full-featured free version of the software:
Try Free File:
You qualify if your income was $36,000 or less, or $69,000 or less if active duty military, or if you qualify for Earned Income Credit

If you switch to Free File you must create a new account and new user ID.
This answer was helpful, however it's very frustration to be bombarded with these upgrades at every turn and have to start all over again if you change your mind. I get it, i'm just not a fan of this site anymore.... it used to be so simple and hassle free.
You can remove fees and downgrade to another version of TurboTax.
Review My Fees to find out what fee or fees that you are being charged.
Now you can see what you have been charged. This TurboTax Help will give you information how to remove a state tax return and/or charges that you do not want to pay.
To remove all fees and start over, you can click Tax Tools, then Clear and start over at the bottom left of the screen.

The TurboTax Free online edition is only for very simple tax returns. The Free online edition does not support any additional forms or schedules so if those are required an upgrade to the Deluxe edition or higher is required.
If you have not paid for the online edition you are using, have not filed your tax return or registered the Free edition, then you can clear your return and start over with a lower priced edition. Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the program screen while working on the 2019 online tax return. Click on Clear & Start Over.

IRS Free File Program - https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/
If you are eligible you can use the TurboTax Free File Program which is free to file both a federal and state tax return. The Free File Program edition is a full featured personal tax program and on a separate website from the TurboTax online editions.
To qualify for free 2019 federal and state tax returns with the Free File Program, you'll need to meet at least one of these requirements:

They are clearly praying on people that want to get it over with quick by not allowing you to remove it in the end. I had to clear my account and restart because these greedy jerks think we should feel sorry for a software industry that shouldn't exist in the first place.
Really funny, because I went and made a new email to make a new account four years ago to receive the free service. Now my "free" account is automatically enrolled for deluxe. Garbage service. Taxes should be performed by the government, like in every other modern nation. Industry lobbyists are the only reason we have to spend any time at all on this mess.
Thanks, TurboTax, for being a spitting-image of how off track capitalism has gotten.
