You will not be able to remove all of your spouse's information from this current TurboTax account since it was used while you were married. However, if you were still legally married as of 12/31/2024, then you should use this account and either file as Married Filing Jointly or Married Filing Separately.
For tax year 2025 you will need to create a new account with a new User ID since you will be filing as Single, assuming your divorce is finalized in 2025.
Also, if the current account has your spouse as the first person on the tax return and you want to file as Married Filing Separately, you need to create a new online account with a new User ID so that your name is listed first on the tax return.
Hi! Thank you for your response! As much as I’d like to keep this account (because of all the info saved over the years), it sounds like it would be my best bet to create a completely new account. That way I can be the first/only adult listed. And, yes, divorce should be finalized early part of this year; as of last December 31, we did not reside together for at least 6 months. I thought I would be filing ‘head of household’ because of not living together and the other qualifications but again, it looks like I might need to create a new account to only reflect my name as the main adult and to choose that option. Thank you again for your time! 🙂
I agree. If you are using Turbotax online, you should make a new account for only yourself. You can use it to file HOH or MFS for 2024 and then carry it forward to file HOH or single in 2025.
You should plan to download as many tax documents as you can from the joint account. Ideally, you can get your tax data files and a PDF of "all forms and worksheets." The data file can't be imported into your new solo account, but it could be opened in the desktop program if you needed to retrieve some information. It is possible that after a couple years of inactivity, access to the files in the old account might be locked. So download them while you can.
