How do i know my federal taxes owed are right? I am paying a lot more this year than in 2017. Are others in NJ experiencing this? Should I have a CPA review it?

Start be checking your data entry for nay typos, especially commas and decimals.

You said you live in NJ, where property taxes are high.

Under the new Federal tax law, there is a $10,000 itemized deduction cap on combined State/Local/Sales/Property taxes.  So check that against 2017. Of course,  the 2018 Federal Standard deduction is higher.
