How do I fix a rejected e-filed tax return if I missed the e-file deadline?
A 2016 tax return can no longer be e-filed, it can only be printed and mailed. Download the PDF of your 2016 online tax return to print and mail to the IRS. E-file rejections are usually due to having tax data on your return that does not match the data in the IRS database to accept the e-filed return, ie 2015 AGI, Social Security number matches to names and dates of birth or a SS number on the return where the same number had already been received by the IRS.
When you sign onto your online account and are on the Welcome Home screen, click on My TurboTax at the top of the screen. When you are on your 2016 Timeline, under the section for SOME THINGS YOU CAN DO, click on either option for Download/print return (PDF) or Download all forms and worksheets
After printing the federal tax return, sign and date the return. Include with the tax return any Forms W-2 or 1099's which have taxes withheld. Mail the return to the IRS and use some type of tracking service from the USPS so you will know when the IRS received the tax return.
Go to this IRS website for the address to mail the federal tax return, with or without a payment, click on your state - https://www.irs.gov/filing/where-to-file-paper-tax-returns-with-or-without-a-payment
