You need to make sure the state wages listed are incorrect.
Your state wages are listed in box 16 on your W-2 form and they can be different from your federal wages listed in box 1. Also, you may have more than one state listed in box 15 on your W-2, so that can make your state wages different from your federal wages.
If you tell us what state you are working on that may be helpful.
The state gets the wage info from W2 box 16. Is box 16 different than box 1? Did you pick the right state in the dropdown on box 15? Check the W2 again. If you change anything on the federal side then you have to start the state return over for it to update.
Hello!
Thanks for the reply. I just checked my W2 and my Box 16 wages are the same as Box 1. I only have one state in Box 15, which is Rhode Island. Both of these are correct in the federal return that I filled out already.
Yet, for some reason the "Federal amount" that shows up in the state return is incorrect.
I only know about California. A lot of states start with the federal AGI. Check Federal 1040 line 11.
