To clarify, what type of income is this?
This was pulling the RMD from an inheritance (from a retirement IRA, I believe) received for the first time this year. This was the first year out of 10 that we pulled some of the money, before all needed to be pulled.
The child must file their own tax return ... this does NOT go on the parent's return.
Never start another return by going back and overwriting everything in the return you just filed. This will replace your info, which means you won't be able to retrieve your return later.
You might want to switch to the TurboTax CD/Download software to save money
If you still want to start another return in TurboTax Online, here’s what to do:
OR use the IRS FREE FILE option for the kid's returns ... https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free
You complete a tax return for your dependent(s) just like you do your own. They will have only their income to report. In your case only one child is required to file a federal return because the distribution is over the filing requirement. The other is not required to file a federal return if the exact amount is $1,100.
The federal filing requirement for dependents is as follows:
Sometimes you are required to file Form 8615 for children who have certain income. Form 8615 - Who Must File
You will need to review your state requirements and you can use this link to check your state: Do I need to file a state return?
there is one additional tax issue. since one received more than $2300 of distributions that income is unearned income and so the kiddie tax applies. the other isn't subject to the rule.
when the kiddies tax applies the options are for the child to file their own return but must include form 8615 which requires the parent(s) to complete their return first or the parents to include the amount on their return using form 8814. that child does not file a return
