How do I claim my rebate recovery credit for a baby born in April of 2020

Hello,

I had a baby born in April of 2020. It is my understanding that I should receive an additional $1,100 for my baby in stimulus money under the rebate recovery credit. I have started the tax filing process on turbo tax. I have entered my child as a dependent for the whole year. When prompted under the federal page regarding stimulus payments, I am told we have received all of our stimulus money even though we have not. It seems this is an issue with Turbo Tax not flagging this. It is not prompting me to a screen where I can indicate I have not received all of my stimulus money.

If you did not receive your first and/or second stimulus payment or if the amount received is not correct, you can claim it on your 2020 tax return as the Recovery Rebate Credit. 

  

In TurboTax Online, to claim the Recovery Rebate credit please do the following: 

1. Sign into your account and continue from where you left off 

2. Click on Federal in the left-hand column, then on Federal Review on the top of the screen 

3. On the next page titled Let's make sure you got the right stimulus amount, click on Continue 

4. Follow the interview 

5. TurboTax will determine whether you are entitled to any additional stimulus 

6. Any stimulus amount remaining due to you will show as a credit on line 30 of your form 1040.

Did you add your baby under My Info?  Be sure when it asks how long your child lived with you that you pick THE WHOLE YEAR (which is acceptable for newborns) and not just the number of months.  Go back and double check that.

How much Stimulus payments did you already get for the first 2 rounds?  How many people were are on your 2019 and 2020 returns?  Did you have a dependent that turned 17 in 2020 or you are not claiming a dependent or spouse you had on 2019?  So the baby might just be replacing someone you lost.

Hi Volvo girl, this is our first and only child. We have no other dependents. My husband I received the stimulus money we were entitled too, nothing more. Based off of what I’ve read on the irs and turbo tax, we are supposed to receive an additional $1100 under the recovery since we filed a new dependent on our 2020 tax return but TurboTax’s system never prompts me to make this claim. We meet all of the requirements.

So on the screen where it asked if you received the right amount of stimulus money did you say NO?  Then enter the amount you did get into the 2 boxes?  Have you checked your 1040 return line 30 to see if the 1,100 is added there?

Okay that did the trick. TurboTax was automatically populating what they thought We’d received already, which was wrong. Thank you for your help!
