You can file and prepare your sister's final individual income tax return the same way you would if she was alive but, "Deceased:" is written at the top of the return followed the person's name and the date of death.
In TurboTax:
1. Open the return
2. Go to My Info/Personal Info
3. Select Edit and continue to the screen "Let's check for some other situations"
3. Scroll down and check the box next to "I am preparing this return for xxx, who has passed away"
4. Enter the date and continue.
Report all income up to the date of death and claim all eligible credits and deductions.
If there is a balance due on the tax return, submit payment with the return or see more options at paying your taxes.
If a refund is due, claim the refund by submitting Form 1310, Statement of a Person Claiming Refund Due a Deceased Taxpayer.
Thanks. Do I go through those steps on my tax return or do I need to set up an account for my sister? She's used Turbo Tax in the past but I don't have her password.
