I am owed a refund but need an extension for a K-1 that won't arrive until September. It looks like if I file an extension, I can't get my refund until you complete that extension? Is that correct? Could I simply file now, get my refund, then file an amended return (and possibly pay a small penalty on my K-1 earnings? I know it will be very small). Is there any other way to get my refund now?

There is no way to get a refund without filing a completed signed tax return. You are correct that you could file with your current information, and then file an amended return later. Under normal circumstances you could possibly owe an underpayment penalty and interest back dated to April 15. I don’t know what would end up happening this year.
