How can I find out: I worked a job that didn't take taxes out of my pay. How much will I owe IRS when I file?

There is no simple answer to your question. The amount of tax you will have to pay depends on many factors - the amount of 1099-MISC income, the types and amounts of any other income, your filing status, deductions or credits you might be eligible for, etc., etc. The only way to determine how much you will owe is to complete your tax return. You can use TaxCaster to get an estimate. (See the comment posted by DoninGA above.) But TaxCaster will not show you the state tax. Or just prepare a trial tax return. If you use TurboTax Online you might want to do that with a separate account, so that your real tax return doesn't get mixed up with the trial. But be careful to keep track of your different accounts. If you use your regular TurboTax Online account for the trial, you can clear the return and start over when you are ready to do your real return.

As others have mentioned, you cannot report self-employment income in Free Edition. If you use TurboTax Online you will have to upgrade to at least Deluxe. If you have expenses related to the self-employment income you will have to upgrade to Self-Employed. Or you can use any edition of the CD/Download TurboTax software. The CD/Download software also lets you save multiple tax returns with different names, so you can do a trial return without interfering with your real return.

Will you be getting a W-2, or a 1099-MISC?

Use the TurboTax calculator TaxCaster to get an estimate of the taxes owed or a tax refund - <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/calculators/taxcaster/">https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/...>
If you were not an employee and are not receiving a W-2, then you are self-employed and need to file a Schedule C with your personal tax return.  Using the online editions of TurboTax you will need to upgrade to Self-Employed.

That is self employment income.  To report your self employment income you will fill out schedule C in your personal 1040 tax return and pay SE self employment Tax. You will need to use the Online Self Employed version or any Desktop program but the Desktop Home & Business version will have the most help.

Self Employment tax (Scheduled SE) is automatically generated if a person has $400 or more of net profit from self-employment.  You pay 15.3% SE tax on 92.35% of your Net Profit greater than $400.  The 15.3% self employed SE Tax is to pay both the employer part and employee part of Social Security and Medicare.  So you get social security credit for it when you retire.  You do get to take off the 50% ER portion of the SE tax as an adjustment on line 27 of the 1040.  The SE tax is already included in your tax due or reduced your refund.  It is on the 1040 line 57.  The SE tax is in addition to your regular income tax on the net profit.
