DO NOT include your child's income on your return.

Your child should file his/her own tax return if:

  • Their unearned income (interest, dividends, etc) is $1,050 or more;
  • Their  earned income (from a job) is $12,000 or more;
  • Their income was from self-employment [issued a 1099-MISC and not a W-2] and is $400 or more; or
  • They want to get back any taxes withheld.

If their income is under the filing requirements they do NOT have to file, unless they want to get a refund of taxes withheld.

IMPORTANT:  If they do file their own return make sure they indicate on it that they are A DEPENDENT OF SOMEONE ELSE and are being claimed by them.
