How can I ensure that the amount that I owe for the 2016 estimated tax penalty fee was paid for when I submitted my Federal Return?

If you have a printed copy of your return, the estimated tax penalty will appear on Line 79 of Form 1040 (line 51 if filing a Form 1040A).  The penalty shows up below your refund or tax due on the form, but it is calculated into those numbers above it.  The default is for TurboTax to include this with your return and it is calculated into your federal tax due or refund.  There is an option during the interview to have the IRS bill you later for this, but if you did not select that option, then the penalty will be shown on the above lines.

If you don't have a copy of your return, you can print one after filing using these steps for online users -

  • Log into your account
  • Hit the Taxes (may say My TurboTax) tab and select My Tax Timeline in the dropdown menu
  • You should see your Federal and State returns and their statuses
  • Scroll down towards the bottom until you reach the section Some Other Things You Can Do
  • Choose Download / Print Return (pdf):  This saves a copy of the pdf of your return that includes all forms required for filing and you can view your 1040 this way.
