More info, on your situation is needed. What year are you filing for.  Where do you live. How do you support yourself.

The money you hear about people getting for just filing a tax return, claiming kids, NORMALLY requires them to  have some earned income (wages or self employment). Without earned income, they are not eligible for the "refundable" Earned Income Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC).  Both credits are calculated on the amount of earned income you have. No earned income means no "refund".

However, because of covid, the rules for 2021 changed and earned income was not needed for the ACTC. In addition, there is stimulus/recovery rebate money available.

A child can be the “qualifying child” dependent of any close relative in the household. If you live with someone else, e.g. your parents, it may be better if they claim your child.

Instead, you could allow the non-custodial parent to claim the children.  Non-custodial parents are allowed to claim the child tax credit, but not the Earned income credit.

Is someone else supporting you?   Are you being claimed as a dependent on someone else's tax return?   If someone else can claim you as a dependent then you cannot claim a dependent yourself.   We need to know the answer to that first.

Or.....do you have some other sort of income to enter on a tax return?   Even if you did not work, if you are NOT someone else's dependent then you can prepare a 2021 tax return to claim your child in order to get the child tax credit.   And...if you did not receive the 3rd EIP you can also use the recovery rebate credit in Federal Review to get the $1400 per person "stimulus" amount.   Again.....you are not eligible for either credit if you can be claimed as someone else's dependent.
