Hi. I chose to pay the turbo tax fee with my refund. My refund was for 1971 less 700 I owed making the new total 1271.00. But only received 587.00? Why?

It sounds like your refund offset may have been more than what you expected.  You should receive a letter in the mail for any offsets to your refund, but it could take a few weeks to receive.

First, check to see the amount of your refund issued here: IRS Where's My Refund?

If you owed back taxes, student loans or child support, call the Treasury Offset Program at 800-304-3107 to find out exactly which agency received your funds.

If you believe the offset was taken by mistake, please see Refund Offsets - Taxpayer Advocate Service.

What did you owe the $700 for?   When you filed were you seeing the net of Federal and State returns?

Federal and state are completely separate.   You can't have a tax due deducted from the other refund.   And when you have the fees deducted from a refund there is an EXTRA $40 (45 in California)  Pay with Refund service charge .
