Help with doing an amendment when payment changed because of advanced child tax credits

2021 return, going to simplify numbers. Used Turbotax Premier

Was getting $1000 back. Got a notice from IRS that I made a mistake. Forgot to include the additional child tax credits for form 6419 which was $3000 total. Added those in and now I owed $2000. So I paid to avoid penalties on the IRS website. Not sure why I had to pay all those child tax credits back to the government though. What good was that?

So I redid my taxes to be sure the numbers added up, added in those advanced child tax credits and yes, the numbers added up to the $2000 payment.  Then realized I forgot a Child Care facility for Dependent care and that dropped it down to $1500 payment.  So now I don't know where in Turbotax to put the amount I actually paid and then show the amount I actually owe.

So TL,DR:

Original 1040: Refund $1000, accepted

Notice a month later: You owe $2000 for mistake, paid.

Redid 1040 with correction, found I missed something else as well, I actually owe $1500.

How do I do this amendment?

You need to file an amended return, Form 1040-X.

Yes, I completed this 1040-X in Turbotax but the numbers don't work out easily. The question is in "Refund or Amount you Owe", Section A above line 18, the original refund was for $1000. Turbotax leaves this in there. It was corrected and I paid $2000.  There was no where in the Step-by-Step to remove the original overpayment so I went into the forms.  I can manually remove the $1000 in Section A and it comes down to $1500 in amount I owe, which is consistent with when I do a new return from scratch. Does this make sense? So I can then file this, knowing I already paid $2000 but I only owed $1500 and make that noticed.

I did not understand exactly what you did and changed.

Just because the number works out to what you expect does not mean it is correctly filled out so the IRS will understand your submission.

For me to understand, I would need to know line#-by-line# what you entered and changed on lines 12-20 and if you changes something entered by Turbotax, why you made that change.

You can also refer to instructions for form 1040-X
