If your mom has already claimed you as a dependent on her return, your return will be rejected if you didn't indicate that you can be claimed as someone else’s dependent

To correct this, go back into your Personal Info section and mark that you can be claimed on another taxpayer’s return, then resubmit your return.

Once that box is correctly selected, the rejection issue should be resolved.

Are you reporting that you are claimed on another person's return?

If you already filed your return, you will have to do an amended return.

If your mother likely qualifies to claim you as her dependent, and your return on which you didn't report that you were a dependent was rejected, then you can either:

  • correct (this is NOT the same thing as filing an amended return) your return to indicate that you ARE a dependent, and then resubmit it for e-filing, OR
  • refile your return by mail, in which case the IRS will eventually audit BOTH yours and your mother's returns, and make a determination as to who is entitled to claim you. You and your mother probably don't want to choose this option.

As another user commented, you can go back into your Personal Info section and mark that you can be claimed on another taxpayer’s return, then resubmit your return.

See this help article for more information on how to report that you can be claimed as a dependent.
