For the last few years, the IRS has been tinkering with the withholding tables, trying to reduce the default values of the tables to over withhold (which causes refunds that are too large). This is one possibility, although somewhat hard to prove.
Of course, there are other possibilities - have you done a line by line comparison between your 2022 and 2023 returns?
Okay. But I do not recall doing that but I still don’t get it. If my paystub say I’m supposed to get this much back because of what was with hell from it I don’t understand why I’m not getting it back
Your paystub may indicate what you paid in as a pre-payment..
BUT
It DOES NOT indicate that you will get any of it back.....in fact, it they didn't withhold enough during the year, you could owe MORE .
You fill out all your tax return data, all income and if your income is high enough, some or all of your prior withholding may be kept by the Govt to pay for roads, military, border patrol, education grants, social programs..etc..etc..etc.. You earn more..the Govt (and state) keep more.
