Sounds like not enough was withheld.
It may be that you got a significant raise in pay during the year so that the tax withheld for a part of the year was based on the assumption you were making less money for the entire year. It could be that you had other income outside of your employment on which taxes were not paid in sufficiently. If you're filing jointly with your spouse, that can push your combined income into a higher bracket than what is being used to calculate the withholding on your wages individually. I suggest you compare your tax return this year with last year, line by line, to see what has changed.
