Have iMac with10.11 - can't use to file 18 taxes - can I file online and how do I start?

You cannot start a 2018 return online yet. The online software is not operational yet, and probably will not be until sometime in December. But, when it is available you will be able to use the online software, since your Mac OS will not support the desktop software.

Do not be in a hurry to start on your 2018 return. The software is still plagued with "bugs" that have to be fixed, and it will have to be updated as forms become available from the IRS. The IRS has not even announced yet when they will begin to accept 2018 returns. Most likely it will be at least late January or maybe even February, with all of the tax law changes and the problems they will have at the beginning of the tax season.

You will be able to transfer 2017 from your Mac into the Online version.
