Has anyone else experienced a dramatic change in estimated refund AFTER submitting payment? My refund after submitting payment reduced 6k!!!

My estimated refund for fed and state combined was 6k more than after I paid to process my taxes. I didnt change anything, there was no corrections after the review. It said my estimated was the same after the review. I feel this inflated refund is a gimmick then they provide the real amount after payment. What the benefit is for this i dont know. Im going to have to file taxes regardless.

Once TurboTax releases the tax return to the IRS, it is totally in the IRS's hands.

You may get  CD-02 tax notice.

You may not be entitled to some or all of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) you claimed on your tax return, and you may need to amend your return.

Or your tax return may have been garnished

"The Department of Treasury's Bureau of the Fiscal Service (BFS) issues IRS tax refunds.

Through the Treasury Offset Program (TOP) program, (BFS) may reduce your refund (overpayment) and offset it to pay:

  • Past-due child support;
  • Federal agency nontax debts;
  • State income tax obligations; or
  • Certain unemployment compensation debts owed to a state (generally, these are debts for
    • compensation paid due to fraud, or
    • contributions owing to a state fund that weren't paid)."
  • Please see the original IRS article Reduced refund

You can check the status of your tax return.  You will need:

  • Social Security Number.
  • Tax return year.
  • Hilling Status.
  • Exact refund amount
