Because you received a 1099-MISC, the IRS will also have received a copy. Therefore you will need to report this 1099-MISC on your 1040. However, you can also report a negative amount under miscellaneous income related to the costs/expenses for which this insurance money was used to offset this 1099-MISC income. Make sure that the negative entry amount being reported does NOT exceed the income reported on the 1099-MISC.
