I am a full time resident of GA and we are both over 65. I completed my taxes using TT Deluxe and my GA return indicated a $-17,000 taxable income. This is due to the very generous retirement income exclusion in the state.
Yesterday I received a "Notice of Proposed Assessment" indicating I owed $2,499 + tax and penalty for unpaid taxes. After several tries to contact DOR, I was able to speak with someone. They are swamped with calls so be prepared for a long wait. I chose the option to have them return my call and keep my place in the cue. It was about an hour later I received a call back. There is a software "glitch" that is not allowing for the retirement income exclusion. The issue was quickly resolved after being put on hold for a short time, they reran our return and there is no tax liability.
I am posting to make other Georgia retirees aware of this should they also receive the notice. The phone number to contact them is listed on the notice - [phone number removed].
