When will form 8283 be available for electronic filers?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
Form 8283 is currently available and ready to e-file. However, due to IRS changes, if you have non-cash donations appraised for $5,000 or more, then you will need to mail in your tax return with an acknowledgement from the donee attached.
Please see this TurboTax Help Article for more information: Can I e-file Form 8283?
i have no totals for any one goodwill item donation over $500 or any individual item over $5000. yet it says i have to print. same donations as last year. has form 8283 been updated in turbo tax. it won't let me efile.

So, I'm confused about how to enter my donation of appreciated stock worth more than $5000 to a DAF in Turbotax Premier.
When I search for form 8283, nothing comes up. I see that I'll have to mail in my return and, I assume, attach the form 8283 that Fidelity Charitable sent me with basis info added. But how do I ensure that Turbo is properly treating this donation in figuring my tax burden for the year?
Yes, there have been changes in reporting charitable donations on Form 8283. You may want to delete/re-enter your donations. If you're using TurboTax Online, close the program, and clear your Cache and Cookies after deleting and before re-entering.
Here's more info on Form 8283 and Charitable Donations.
I'm not using Turbotax Online (I'm using TurboTax Premier desktop for Windows).
Maybe I need to contact Turbo support because I still am unclear on how/if I can attach form 8283 to my taxes so that I can print them out and mail them to the IRS.
If I don't input the appreciated stock donation to the DAF as a charitable donation, Turbo won't figure my itemized deduction correctly--in fact, it'll keep trying to give me the standard deduction. But if I do input it, how or where do I attach form 8283?

Thanks, this is helpful. However, although I followed the prompts in the Step-by-Step for charitable donations to add information on this donation, when I follow your instructions to view the Form 8283 that was generated, it is incorrect--and not directly editable. It put my stock contribution of over $5,000 in Section A instead of Section B. And it has also included an in-kind contribution of $59 (food to a food pantry) on the 8283 which I think should not need to be listed there at all.
Should I delete both of these donations and try inputting them again?
I also received a Form 8283 from the organization (a DAF) to which I made the stock contribution. Is that considered my "receipt" to be included along with the 8283 that Turbo generates?
Thanks!
1. Yes to delete. There aren't any known issues with the 8283. I hate to say delete, close the program, update, and maybe update again and again. Then try entering the information again.
If it still refuses to go to the right spot, you need to contact support.
2. The $59 food donation is part of your total donations which are over $500 so everything goes to the 8283. It should be in part A so that part is right. I do think you should delete it just to clear the whole 8283 form and have it deleted.
3. The next issue is your section B donation and receipt. They gave you a separate 8283 because you need a separate one for them. That is not a qualified appraisal so I am not sure what you have in your possession.
About Form 8283, Noncash Charitable Contributions states: Section B. Include in Section B only items (or groups of similar items) for which you claimed a deduction of more than $5,000. Do not include items reportable in Section A. Items reportable in Section B require a written qualified appraisal by a qualified appraiser. You must file a separate Form 8283, Section B, for each donee organization and each item of property (or group of similar items).
Putting it all together:
you need 2 forms 8283 - one for the food pantry and one for the stocks.
You need an equivalent of an appraisal by a qualified appraiser.
Sorry to keep asking for help on this, but...
I deleted the $59 donation of in-kind canned goods from my list of donations, so now the over $5K stock donation is showing up in Section A of my 8283 and nothing is showing up in Section B, which I believe is correct, since the 8283 specifically says, under the Section A instructions, "Also list publicly traded securities and certain other property even if the deduction is more than $5000". It doesn't require an appraisal because Fair Market Value on day of transfer is used instead.
If I skip including the in-kind donation in my list of charitable deductions, thereby not needing to submit any appraisals and receipts will I be able to e-file? The convenience of e-filing is easily worth the few dollars I lose by not reporting that donation.
Thanks,
Yes, if your donated stocks are less than 10K, you don't need an appraisal. An appraisal is needed for other items valued at over 5K.
However, if non-cash items total over 5K, you may still not be able to Efile. There have definitely been issues with Form 8283 this year, so it's ultimately up to IRS interpretation on this one.
"If you plan to donate property worth more than $5,000 ($10,000 for stock in closely-held firms), you'll need to get a formal appraisal by an appraiser who meets IRS guidelines."
When you're looking at entries in FORMS mode, right-click to either get a Magnifying Glass to take you to the source form (to make changes), or a pop-up where you can click on 'Data Source'.
