Form says we have a $27,140.00 child tax credit for adoption, yet we only have a $6560 total refund. Is there a way to add more of the credit this year (larger refund)?

The adoption credit is nonrefundable, so it cannot lower your taxes due to less than zero.

However, any credit in excess of your tax liability may be carried forward for up to five years. The maximum amount (dollar limit) for 2017 is $13,570 per child.

Child tax credit or adoption credit? Is this related to your other post?

This is my first time using this, so didn't realize I could respond to the same post.

So, if the maximum amount I can receive is $13,570 per child, what do I need to do to on my return to receive more this year than turbotax automatically gave me?  Or is it a set amount we receive each year based on taxes paid/owed?

It is not a set amount, but once your total tax is reduced to zero, it can't go below that.  However, as @SweetieJean said, unused portions of the credit can be carried over to future tax years.

can I get access to the unused portion on this year's return?  In other words, can I choose to receive more of the adoption credit this year?

As has been answered twice, no.

Thank you for your help, although I would appreciate more respect from these responses.  Nowhere in the previous responses did anyone say "no, that is not possible".  I apologize for my inexperience.
