Form 4684, I don't understand the questions?

If you have Casualties and Thefts to report, TurboTax helps you file the 4684.  Since you are using the TurboTax Premier online version, the form does not usually pop up for you unless there is an error.

In order to understand what the error may be, you can go back to the step-by-step of this area to review.

You may be able to claim casualty loss deductions under certain situations:

https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tips/tax-relief/about-casualty-deduction-for-federal-income-tax/L8AV...

1.  If you qualify to claim these deductions, go to Deductions and Credits.

2.  Select Other Deductions and Credits at the bottom of the list.

3.  Casualties and Thefts are the third item down.

You will answer the questions to determine if these are deductible expenses.  Review your answers to see what could be triggering an error.

If you didn't have any Casualty and Theft losses, you can delete the form as follows:

  1. Select Tax Tools.
  2. Choose Tools.
  3. Choose Delete a Form
  4. Find Form 4684 and all worksheets attached to it, select Delete.
  5. As a step to be sure the form has been deleted, run through step 4 once more to be sure that form was deleted as well as any related worksheets or forms.

Form 4684, I don't understand the questions?

@Maryvicerog777  What questions do you have?

IRS Form 4684 is used to report gains and losses from casualties and thefts.

Three types of casualty losses can be reported:

  • Federal Casualty Losses
  • Disaster Losses
  • Qualified Disaster Losses

All three types of losses refer to federally declared disasters, but the requirements for each loss vary.

Forms availability says that the form will be available on March 4.

Why does the date keep changing on this? It first said 2/16, then 2/25, now 3/4. Why?

Form 4684, I don't understand the questions?

This delay is being caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and year end tax revisions.

The Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021 was signed into law on December 27, 2020.  The legislation includes $900 billion for various COVID-19 relief programs, government funding of $1.4 trillion and many, many tax provision changes.

IRS Form 4684 Casualties and Thefts will be available March 4 according to forms availability.
