I was laid off from my job last year and was on unemployment insurance, requiring a 1099-G. Turbotax forced me to pay for Deluxe to process this.
I'm outraged that this is a thing.

Sorry. Only very simple Form 1040 returns that do not require the use of any other forms or schedules can be prepared using the Free Edition. A 1099G for unemployment requires the use of extra forms, so you cannot use Free Edition with unemployment income.
In order to use TurboTax you must upgrade to Deluxe.
