my son received social security of $12936.00 for 2018 and earnings of 903.99 on his W-2. Is the Social Security considered "unearned income"? It was not listed as such on the explanation

It is nontaxable income. It is neither earned nor unearned for the purposes of the filing requirement for dependent. It does however, count for support in determining if he paid more than half of his total support.
