Filing jointly 1st time, husband added W2 and now we owe taxes? Why is that we owe state but refund for federal? I'm confused.

It could happen because your employers didn't withheld enough state taxes form your pay checks, and enough federal taxes. You can adjust your withholdings to avoid balance due next year.  You can use TurboTax withholding calculator:

Your tax return is never final until all your income, deduction, dependents, and credits are included. The refund meter is misleading at best. It sounds like one job, considered by itself, had more tax withheld then would have been owed for a taxpayer filing alone, which resulted in an apparent refund. The other job, considered alone, had less tax withheld than would have been owed for a single job. So adding the second job reduced the apparent refund or increased the tax owed.  But it’s always misleading to look at your tax refund until all the facts are included.
