Do you have a TurboTax Online account?

We'll help you get started or pick up where you left off.

Filing as a self-employed freelancer this year, someone said they also used TurboTax and estimated payments were not on the state form online (Oregon). What do I do now?

I have submitted federal and state taxes now for Oregon state as a self-employed freelancer. It was brought to my attention today by another self-employed Oregonian that mentioned they did not enter estimated tax payments under the state section and when they wanted to go back they couldn't. They called TurboTax and they said it was a bug in the online program this year. This is my first year as full-time freelance and definitely did not know this figure was supposed to be included on my state tax form (and I paid a LOT in state tax). I'm not totally sure what I should do here, or what happens from here. Please help, and thank you.

TurboTax doesn't know if or when you made your estimated tax payments to the federal or state government, so you have to manually enter them into the software.   They are entered in the State portion of the interview, not with your federal estimated taxes.  On future tax returns, you definitely want to enter these so that you are credited with all the $$ you paid.

You may need to file an amendment with the State of Oregon.  However, you probably won't need to as the state should apply those credits to your return.  They definitely know you made the estimated payments.  Wait for the state of Oregon to process your tax return.  If they do not apply the tax credits for the estimated payments you made, you can file the amendment and recoup those funds.

Good luck with the new business!
