Filed my NY state taxes 10/15/25 and sent my bank information for taxes owed at the same time. According to the app they accepted on 10/16. NY state sent a penalty.

Sent a penalty for late payment, even though my bank info for withdrawal of payment was sent in 10/15/25

April 15 is the due date, not October 15.

The penalty is for learning purposes.

If you owe taxes, a payment is due on April 15, even if you get an extension of the time to file.  You would make an estimated payment, and include that on your tax return, if you paid too much, it will come back as a refund when you file.  I don't know what the NYS Tax department policy is on waiving penalties if this is your first time, but I have gotten pretty good service from them over the phone.

many get confused by the extenion.

there are two penalies to consider

1) penalty for paying what you owe after the April 15 deadline

2) penalty for submitting the tax return after April 15 deadline.

The extension only covers #2.  You get an extra 6 months for submitting the paperwork without incuring a "late filing" penalty.

However, that extension does not cover #1.  The payment is due on April 15.  If you don't know how much you owe (because you haven't completed the tax return!), then you are to estimate as best as possible.  Any late payment penalty is only calculated on the Amount Due, which is after applying the estimated payments.
