Federal Review - Form 1116 hangup and Recovery Rebate

I'm near the end of Federal and am hung up at Form 1116 (TT website says it's available, but the program says Available 0).   So I tried to bypass that and go to the Federal Review ("Select Done to continue with the Federal Review") to enter the amount from letter 6475 (that I didn't receive) ... and from the instructions:  "During the Federal Review, we’ll check if you meet eligibility requirements for the stimulus payment."  Well, that's not happening and I see no other way to enter the data.

So how can I enter the amount from Letter 6475 while still waiting to see what happens with Form 1116? (And yes I meet the requirements to claim the 3rd stimulus payment amount.)

Federal Review - Form 1116 hangup and Recovery Rebate

If you didn’t get your full third stimulus payment, you may be eligible to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2021 tax return.

To be eligible for the Recovery Rebate Credit you need to be a U.S. citizen or U.S. resident alien in 2021 and have a Social Security number that is valid for employment.

You cannot be claimed as a dependent by someone else to be eligible.

Your credit amount will be reduced if your 2021 adjusted gross income (AGI) is more than:

  • $150,000 if married and filing a joint return or filing as a qualifying widow or widower
  • $112,500 if filing as head of household or
  • $75,000 for eligible individuals filing as a single or as married filing separately.

Your payment will be reduced by 5% of the amount by which your AGI exceeds the applicable threshold above. (IRS FAQ Recovery Rebate Credit )

To claim the Recovery Rebate Credit in TurboTax, please follow these steps:

  1. After entering all your information click "Search" at the top right and type "Stimulus".
  2.  Follow the jump to link (if you do not qualify for the Recovery Rebate Credit the stimulus questions will not come up).
  3. On the screen "Let's double-check the amount you received" you will be asked about the amount of third stimulus payment you received. TurboTax will then calculate the amount of stimulus payment remaining that you are still entitled to get.
  4. Any stimulus amount remaining due to you will show as The Recovery Rebate Credit on line 30 of Form 1040.

Please see What are the eligibility rules for the Recovery Rebate Credit? for additional information.

Federal Review - Form 1116 hangup and Recovery Rebate

Form 1116 -

It appears that we cannot efile with this form. Ok, that's an IRS problem.  But then why is TT offering me the option to efile if I can't.  Instead, the screen should show  "You cannot efile because you have form 1116 but, because TT made it appear that you could after March 3, we're sending you a 10% discount on next year's TT.  Thanks for being a valued customer."

Recovery Rebate -

I saw that pat answer numerous times, but it didn't help me find what I wanted to see.  For others who get a letter 6475 from the IRS stating 'we gave you $$$ in stimulus' but you didn't receive it, then go to 'Forms' and find 'Recov Rebate Cr' worksheet... the details are there.  In particular, look at lines 9, 10 ... if your AGI exceeds $160k, then you can't take the credit.  Otherwise, you can see how your credit is calculated.

So TT should show a screen with a statement such as "Let's check if you can get a RR rebate.  Sorry, you do not qualify for the RR credit because ...".

TT dropped the ball on a number of things this year.  I understand that the IRS made it difficult, but some minor updates to TT would have taken care of a number of problems people are having this year.  And at least a 10% discount on next year's TT would go a long way to help me decide if I will use TT next year or try something else.
