Even after I follow all suggestions to enter Railroad tier 1, tier 2 and tier 1 med in box 14, I still get the message that the employer withheld too much.

I am trying to finalized my taxes to submit. But I keep having that message about employer withholding too much when I enter Railroad tier 1, tier 2 and tier 1 med. I have follow all the instructions in the community forum, but I still get the message. Only difference is that the amount withheld changes when I add RRC and/or 401K.

There was another post that mentioned another form that must be filled out in this case. But I am not sure. It is my first time filing with turbotax and I am also wondering if my taxes were being done correctly in the past.

Thank you!

Try adding an additional box 14 entry with the amount reported in box 1 using the drop-down code RR for Railroad Retirement Compensation.

This should clear the error message.

Hi AnnetteB6,

I tried doing that after reading one of the posts from the forum, but I still get the message. The only thing that changes is that the amount withheld is different (lower) when I add a new line with RR code and box 1 amount. I even tried combining the 401k amount and box 1 amount and added in a new line with RR code, but I still get the message. The only difference is that the amount withheld is lower when I add box 1 amount with RR code into box 14.

Any further assistance would be greatly appreciated!

@jmartin007  You need to contact your employer.  If they withheld too much then they need to correct the form.

If they won't then you need to file form 843 to get the excess back.

Here's the IRS on this.
