Employer Took Less Taxes Out on State in the Middle of The Year

I am in Kentucky. I had filled out a form asking my past employer to take $10 extra out on Federal each week so I could get a return in 2025 on Federal. It worked out well. But at that same time, for some odd reason they started taking $16.96 less out on my State taxes each week. They were taking $26.96 out on States taxes from the beginning of 2024 until April 18th. From that date until the end of the year, they only took $10.00 out each week on State. This caused me to owe over $400 to State. Is there anything I can do about this? Are they allowed to lower what they were taking out in the middle of the year? This just doesn't seem right or fair.

You will need to talk to your HR department to figure out what was going on with that change in withholding.  I don't see that Kentucky changed their rules in the middle of the year but maybe they did.

Either way there isn't anything that you can do about it for the taxes due this year.  You'll need to fix it at your employer so you don't owe even more next year.
