EIC

Hi,

I already filed my tax returns for 2024 and got refunds.   Then, I got a letter from the IRS telling me I qualify for EIC (minimum amount as I do not have children).  TurboTax tells me I do not qualify (line item 27 in 1040 is blank) so that I cannot amend my return.  Who is correct?  What should I do?

Thanks

If the IRS determined that you qualify, than you could file a paper amended return. Read the IRS notice carefully to make sure that what they are saying is accurate and correct to your situation. You should be able to find out if you qualify by following the steps shown in your IRS notice. You can find your notice number in the top right corner of your notice.

Click on this link to find your notice number for some additional instructions: IRS Notices EITC

You likely got a Notice CP08, CP09 or CP27. Click on the Notice number that you got and it tells you what you need to do. You may not have to amend. It looks like you may be able to fill out a worksheet and send it to the IRS. Read your notice carefully and refer to the link above.

If you need to amend by mail:

Form 1040-X is here.

Instructions for Form 1040-X are here.
