eFiling joint return where one taxpaper is deceased

I am filing a married filing jointly return in which one spouse died in 2019, 10 months ago.  When I attempt to efile, I get a rejection message that the AGI does not match what is in the IRS database.  I have double checked, and the AGI that I entered is correct.

Is there an explanation for why the efiling is being rejected and is there a method to efile such a return?

I'm so sorry for your loss.

Most likely, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has locked your spouse’s Social Security number to prevent fraud and that will prevent you from e-filing your tax return.

  • Print your return, sign it, and mail it in. Don’t forget to also print and mail your state return.
