E-filed a 1040X, IRS requested a 1099-R form
I e-filed 2025 TurboTax Fed/State taxes in early February 2026. When I tried to download my tax forms, TT file included a "DO NOT FILE" watermark on every page! Got distracted by trying to print clean copies without the watermark. Only later did I realize that TT had deleted (?) my 2025 estimated quarterly tax information. So, I overpaid my 2025 taxes.
I then e-filed 1040X, adding the missing prepaid tax info. The IRS sent a letter indicating that I was owed a refund due to missing estimated quarterlies (a good thing) 3 days after my 1040X forms were sent.
Then the IRS received my 1040X forms; oh man! The IRS sent a 2nd letter this week indicating that they needed me to "complete a 1099-R form to support the changes made on the amended return". Confusing! My amended taxes were had no impact on my 1099-Rs!
Even more concerning, the letter received on May 18 was an IRS system-generated letter--different format, different font. I thought it was a scam letter.
So, here's the bottom line:
1. Don't waste time trying to navigate the TT "DO NOT FILE" conundrum; TurboTax IT team, do better!
2. Amended 1040X forms do not include any 1099-R forms when e-filed by TT.
3. If you receive an IRS letter in the mail, I encourage you to check your inbox under 'Notices & Letters' at IRS.gov to determine whether the letter is legit before you respond. Will save you a few anxious hours.
4. The IRS letter formats/fonts are different based on where tax forms are located in THEIR system, BUT--to be absolutely safe--assume that the letter is a scam and CHECK your IRS.gov inbox to verify. You can also call the IRS at [phone number removed] (if you have a few hours to spare on hold).
5. If the IRS letter asks you to "complete a 1099-R form", DON'T! Contact your financial institution and have THEM send the forms directly to the IRS. Taxpayers are NOT supposed to generate 1099-R forms!
6. The IRS call center staffing has mostly been eliminated; unless you have a specific action (request a transcript, check status of refund, make a payment), the system keeps returning to the main menu. BUT, if you really must call, then calling really early in the day mid week is highly encouraged.
Just wanted to share this info in the hopes that it saves other taxpayers valuable time and energy.
Finally, during this process, I did contact TT's contact a pro service; DON'T EVEN BOTHER.
