dual citizen us/canada - living in canada

Hi there,

I was born in the US and I am a Canadian citizen through my mother.

I have lived and worked in Canada, but never lived or worked in the US.

I have never thought to file US taxes, and that’s a problem if I ever decide to relocate to the US.

How do I go about this? I’d prefer and expert to do my taxes.

All US citizens living and working abroad have to pay and file US taxes.  The US taxes all citizens on their global income.   Failure to file a US tax return if you are required to file,  can result in penalties.  If the failure to file is due to willful conduct, other consequences can include losing your passport or even jail time.

If you need help filing your taxes, you can file your 2024 tax return using TurboTax Live Full Service. You might also need to file returns from previous years to report any income you have had in the past.  You should get in touch with a tax professional that could help you get  up to date with your filings.

The IRS has established procedures to help taxpayers living abroad get current with their tax filing requirements.  For more information see the Streamlined filing compliance procedures.
