Don’t realize we need to file as married, we both filed as single last year

How do we amend 2 returns for married filing as joint? It was our first year married and we didn’t know we had to file as married until now.. will be filing as married this year but what do we do about last year since I filed as HOH and she filed single?

You will want to amend your HOH return to MFJ. Be sure to include any refund- or money paid- from her return along with yours. See How do I amend my federal tax return for a prior year? If you filed state returns, see How do I amend my state return? The IRS will catch her SSN on your joint return so nothing needs to be done with her original. The IRS will correct that.
