If you have a balance due, you can have the government agency withdraw it or you can pay it online at the federal and state level. Enter your bank information and once your return is processed, they will withdraw the amount, no penalty for being late. If you want to pay online, mark you will mail a check just to get the program to let you through.
Pay through either Direct Pay or your individual online account.. To set up a payment plan, see Find details on payment plan types
I'm just so confused though if you are paying for me or not. I entered in information but no confirmation on what is being done.
You can have the IRS and/or your state debit your balance due from your bank account if you choose that option.
But do I need to go to each website and provide it or does Turbotax on my behalf?
No, if you enter your banking info for 'Direct Debit' the IRS and State will withdraw the funds from your bank account. You don't need to do anything further.
@jryockim
How do I confirm if they are paying on my behalf? I just spent an hour on the phone with Turbotax and then when the agent connected. It hung up... I owe quite a bit and don't want to pay twice to be sure...
The first page of your tax return PDF is the Filing instructions page- that page will show the account and amount you have scheduled. It normally takes the IRS a few days to take the payment, but it is effective the date you scheduled it.
There is not an instruction page when I download my return. It goes right into my estimates for 2026 and then right to the 1040 start.
