TurboTax has 2 free products--the TurboTax Free File Program (in conjunction with the IRS and the Free File Alliance) and the regular Free Edition (for limited simple returns). If you think you were eligible for the TurboTax Free File Program mentioned in the article (the product in alliance with the IRS) but ended up in a paid regular product, you can phone TurboTax Support, mention the article, and discuss it with them.
You would have qualified for the TurboTax Free File Program if you had met just ONE of these:
1) 2018 AGI of $34,000 or less
or
2) Eligible for EIC (earned income credit)
or
3) Active duty military including Reservists/ National Guard with military W-2 and 2018 AGI of $66,000 or less
If you used a regular paid product, such as Deluxe, when you actually qualified for the regular Free Edition, you can also discuss that with them.
