If Social Security Benefits are your only income, there is no federal tax on it. There is no state income tax in Tennessee so social security benefits would not be taxed there either.

The reason for SweetieJean's question is that if you are married and filing Married Filing Jointly, your Social Security Benefits could be taxed if the combined income included income from other sources and reaches certain levels.
