If your child earned less than $6200 of W-2 income and no taxes were withheld, then no tax return needs to be filed at all.

If your child earned "MORE" than $400 that was NOT reported on a W-2, 1099-DIV, 1099-INT or something like that, then it would be considered self-employment income and your child is required to file a tax return.

Self-employment income, to include Income reported on a 1099-MISC with an amount in box 7 is required to be reported if it's more than $400.

If your dependent child is under age 19 (or under 24 if a full time student), he or she must file a tax return for 2016 if he had any of the following:

1.         Total income (wages, salaries, taxable scholarship etc.) of more than $6,300 (2016).

2.         Unearned income (interest, dividends, capital gains) of more than $1050 (2016).

3.         Unearned income over $350 and gross income of more than $1050

4.         Household employee income (e.g. baby sitting, lawn mowing) over $2000 ($6300 if under age 18)

5.         Other self employment income over $400, including box 7 of a 1099-MISC

As an addendum, the only reason for filing a tax return if all the above conditions are true, would be to get any withheld taxes refunded.

No. If a student has $1100 of investment income, he will owe $5 in income tax. 1100-1050 standard deduction = $50 taxable income.  50 x 10% = 5.
