Why does it say my state tax in not completed?

UPDATED FOR TAX YEAR 2019

Your state return(s) may not have been transmitted with the federal return and will show a status of incomplete if you filed your federal return by itself (or with another state).

If your federal return has been accepted you can e-file your state return.  E-filing a state by itself is only allowed once a federal return is accepted.

To access your state return(s), after filing your federal return, please follow these steps:

  1. In TurboTax Online, sign into your account.
  2. Select Tax Home in the left menu.
  3. Scroll down to Your tax returns & documents.
  4. Select 2019, and then select Add a State (you're not actually adding a state, this just gets you into the right menu).
  5. Once you're in your return, you can navigate around as usual.
  6. Click File in the black bar on the left of your screen.  Continue through the screens to e-file your state return.

Does it say the state return is "incomplete"?  Does it use that term?

If so, it can show that if you tried to efile the state return previously when one of the state forms was not yet available.   If that's the case, we can tell you how to open the return back up to efile.

Are both states showing as "incomplete" or just one of them?

Did you efile the Federal return, and has it been accepted?

Why does it say my state tax in not completed?

"I just want to do everything over again."

What do you mean by that?   Did you efile the Federal return, and has it been accepted?    If it has been accepted, we can tell you how to open your return up to efile your NY return.
