If you worked as an independent contractor for wages from which no tax, Social Security or Medicare was withheld then you have self-employment income and you prepare a Schedule C for your business expenses. You might receive a 1099NEC --but even if you do not -- if you earn at least $400 of self-employment income it is supposed to be entered on a tax return.
