Do You Need to File Taxes?

After paying to file my return, I learned that I didn't need to file because my income was well below the IRS requirement. 

It would have been nice if Turbo Tax had advised me that I didn't need to file. It turns out that I didn't need to file for the past 7 years yet Turbo Tax gladly took my money.

There are circumstances where you might be required to file regardless of your income but none of those applied to me.

Turbo Tax Live should be programmed to recognize this and advise accordingly. I really can't afford to pay for an unnecessary service.

Thank you. I submitted a refund request though I should advise others that refunds are not guaranteed. Turbo Tax says that once you submit payment that is an acknowledgement that you were satisfied with the service. In this case, it wasn't necessary for me to file, and I should have been advised of that. 

If your income falls below the IRS filing requirements, then Turbo Tax should advise you that a return is not necessary. In my case, the minimum income was about $14,000 while my declared income was only $5,000. For the past 7 years I have paid to file an unnecessary return.

I feel like I've been ripped off.

Wow. Turbo Tax promptly responded to my request for a refund and immediately refunded the amount paid. I'm thoroughly satisfied with customer service.

UPDATE:

Turbo Tax did not refund payment for the Federal return that had already been accepted by the IRS, but they did refund payment for the state return that had not yet been filed.

Again, my declared income was well below the filing requirements for both the Federal and state returns. This should be recognized as the return is being prepared with an advisement that a return is not necessary. For the past seven years, I have paid for an unnecessary service.

Thanks! The first time, I submitted a request online and as noted, received a refund for the state return that had not yet been filed. 

So, I just called the number you provided and received a refund for the Federal return that was filed. Thank you.
