Is it really helpful to deflect these questions? Are we sure the taxpayer (in their situation) paid $200 for Turbotax live, or maybe the icon is a mistake. Additionally, the Live expert will assist with a 2021 tax, the terms of service say they don't give advice or provide tax planning for the future.
"Do I qualify for head of household?"
Maybe.
You have to pay more than half the total cost of keeping up your household, that includes rent, food, and utilities. It does not include clothing, medical expenses or other personal expenses for you and your child.
The question is, what is a household. You and your child might be a separate household from your parents, depending on the circumstances, but probably not. You would be a separate household if they were unrelated landlords. You and your child would do your own activities, eat separate meals, and so on. However, if you share meals with your parents, and your parents play with and sometimes watch your child when you are out, then it is more likely that you are one combined household. If you have a combined household, then you aren't the head unless you pay more than half the total expenses (including household expenses for your parents.)
Theoretically yes; but from a practical application, no. The rule is that you must have paid more than half the household expenses.
If your situation closely matches the IRS "Acknowledged Significant Advice" at the link below, you probably qualify. http://www.unclefed.com/ForTaxProfs/irs-wd/1998/1998-041.pdf
It's a tough standard to meet and most living arrangements will not qualify. Since it's family and not unrelated people, like 2 single moms sharing a residence, it's even more unlikely. If you try it, be prepared to prove it with detailed accounting records of household expenses.
