Do I need to report my American Funds account if I didn't do anything with it this year? No sales occurred or funds added.

If you received dividends and/or capital gains that were automatically reinvested, you would need to claim those as dividend income even though you did not take them in the form of cash.  The company should provide you with a 1099-DIV showing those transactions.
