Do I need to file taxes if I didn't have a job in 2016?

To see if you need to file, check the chart shown in the TurboTax FAQ below,  which is below based on your filing status, age, and gross income amount.   

Keep in mind that you will also need to file if you had at least $400 in net earnings from self-employment (income minus expenses)  or you had marketplace health insurance and received advanced payments for the premium tax credit.

"However, it's perfectly legal to file a tax return showing zero income, and this might be a good idea for a number of reasons. Before you decide to skip your return this year, consider whether it might be worthwhile to file."
